The DeKalb County Public Library System is hosting a variety of events for children and teens this Summer, 2008!

MAY 2008

ELECTRONICS RECYCLLING EVENT
SATURDAY, MAY 24, 2008 FROM 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

 

Keep DeKalb beautiful will offer residents of DeKalb County and metro Atlanta another opportunity to recycle their old electronic items properly and reduce the environmental liability of hazardous material entering Seminole Landfill.

It’s estimated that there are at least 4.4 million PCs and 8 million Televisions in 3 million households in Georgia.  This e-waste will eventually become 334,800 tons of e-waste that will end up in our landfills.

Our goal is to promote the recovery, reuse and recycling of obsolete electronic equipment, and to encourage the design, manufacture and purchase of environmentally responsible electronic equipment.

 

ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT TO BE ACCEPTED:

Computer Monitors, Computer CPUs, Laptops, Printers, Disk Drives, Floppy Disks, Test & Networking Equipment, Modems, Circuit Boards, Electrical Panels, UPS/Battery Back up, CD ROMS, Televisions ($10.00 Charge), Stereos, Copiers, Video Machines, VCRs, Camcorders, Cameras, Record Players, Speakers, Typewriters, Fax Machines, Projectors, Computer Mouse, Microwave Ovens, Telephones, CB Radios, CD Players, Portable Radios, Cell Phones, Keyboards, Scanners, Cables (Vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, washers, dryers, freezers, De-humidifiers or humidifiers, and gas-powered equipment will not be accepted.)

DEKALB CEO LIFTS WATER RESTRICTIONS
Pools Set to Open on Time

 

DECATUR – Chief Executive Officer Vernon Jones announced in a press conference held today, March 28, 2008, that DeKalb would be enforcing new water regulations effective April 1, 2008. 

 

The changes for DeKalb County water usage are as follows:

 

Pools:

 

-         Effective April 1, 2008, existing and new public and private indoor and outdoor swimming pools will be permitted to open and be topped off as necessary for maintenance.

 

Existing Landscape:

 

-         Effective immediately, each household, business, institution, or property owner will be allowed to use one garden hose, 25 minutes per day, during designated days to water plants only, existing lawns are not included:

 

a.       The house must be hand held during watering and equipped with a standard spray nozzle that automatically turns off when you let go of it. 

b.      Even-numbered addresses may water on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays between the hours of midnight and 10 a.m.

c.       Odd-numbered addresses may water on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays between the hours of midnight and 10 a.m.

 

-         Effective April 1, 2008, newly installed landscaping, except aeration and over seeding, may be watered using an irrigation systems 3 days per week for 10 weeks following installation with the following requirements:

 

a.       By any person who has registered with the Outdoor Water Use Registration program at http://www.urbanagcouncil.com.

b.      Even-numbered addresses may water on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays between the hours of midnight and 10 a.m.

c.       Odd-numbered addresses may water on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays between the hours of midnight and 10 a.m.

d.      Only one new landscaping installation in 2008 willb e allowed per property.

 

Through the announcement comes as a sigh of relief to many DeKalb business owners and residents, CEO Jones continues to encourage all citizens to reduce water usage.

“Dump it Right” for Earth Day
In conjunction with the Great American Cleanup
Saturday, April 19, 2008 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Dump-It-Right Day will give residents a free opportunity to get rid of items that normally require a disposal fee. All clothing will be donated to the Atlanta Alliance on Developmental Disabilities (AADD), a non-profit organization. Cartridge World, a local print supply recycling company, will be on site to collect ink and laser print cartridges. Blue Rhino, the nation’s leading tank exchange company, will also collect empty propane tanks.
Additional items collected will include scrap metal, electronics and “junk” that are typically illegally dumped.

 

Got tires? Keep DeKalb Beautiful will also be accepting used tires during “Dump it Right Day.”  Keep DeKalb Beautiful is focused on increasing recycling efforts of tires, which will preserve natural resources. Individuals are limited to10 tires per car load. Off-road tires will not be accepted.

 

Residents will also be given directives to take their used motor oil and car batteries to local Bridgestone/Firestone Retail and Commercial Operations, LLC (BFRC) affiliate stores for proper disposal.

ABSENTEE VOTING

House Bill 244 allows for “no excuse” absentee voting by mail.  Application may be accepted six months prior to an election.

Absentee applications are available at both the DeKalb County website and Secretary of State website or by contacting the DeKalb County Voter Registration & Elections Office at 4380 Memorial Drive, Decatur, GA 30032, Phone: 404-298-4020.  You may fax you application to: 404-298-4038.

If you are phyisically disabled or over 75 years, select “All Absentee Ballots as Allowed by Law” on the application and you will automatically receive all ballots for the 2008 Election Cycle (excluding the Presidential Preference Election and any Special Elections).  Otherwise, absentee applications are required for each election.

Both the Presidential Preference and General Primary Elections nominates party candidates and requires that you designate the party ballot you wish to receive.  This does not mean you are declaring your allegiance to either party.

The absentee poll will be open 45 days prior to each of the above elections for in-house voting, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  If you are eligible to vote absentee in person (a reason is still required), we highly recommend you do so prior to the week of Advance Voting to avoid long lines and lengthy waits.  The Absentee Poll will not be open the day before the election.

VOTER ID

Please note senate Bill 84 requires one of the following valid picture ID’s for anyone voting in person:

GA Driver’s License

GA or Federal Issued Photo ID Card

U.S. Passport

Government Issued Employment Photo ID Card

Military Photo ID Card

Tribal Photo ID Card

To obtain a GA Voter ID Card at no cost, you must appear at the office of Voter Registration and Elections or GA Driver Services and provide the following:

Photo Identity document, or a

Non-Photo identity document which includes both your full legal name & date of  birth

PLUS
Evidence that you are registered; and Documentation showing you name and residential address    

ADVANCE VOTING

Advance Voting is available in perso, without providing a reason, at the office of Voter Registration & Elections Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM the week prior to each election.  Satellite offices throughout the county for the General Primary and General Elections, with locations to be announced later, will be open for the Elections, but not the Runoffs.

Presidential Preference:            Jan. 28 – Feb. 1
General Primary:                      July 7 – July 12
     Run-Off (VR&E Office Only)     July 28 – Aug. 1
General Election                      Oct. 27 – Oct. 31
     Run-Off (VR&E Office Only)     Nov 24 – Nov 28*

*DeKalb County Offices will be closed for Thanksgiving Nov. 27 & 28.

ELECTION DAY

You do not register by political party in the State of Georgia.  You choose the primary in which you wish to vote by selecting the party on the Voter’s Certificate on Presidential Preference or General Primary Election Day.  Examples are posted that the poll.  A run-off is simply a continuation of the Election.  You must vote for the same party in the run-off as you did in the Primary.

If you fail to vote in the General Primary, you are still elegible to vote in the General Primary Run-off and/or General Election.
